Are you one of these four?
There's four types of small business owners and I work best with one of them. If that's you, let's work together!
In a recent workshop we started talking about the type of small business owner that is engaged, enthusiastic, community oriented and eager to participate. Sadly, we agreed that they are the minority.
I’ve identified four types of small business owners.
Which one are you?
1. The “old and wise”. A long time business owner, they have seen a lot. Business slowly declining over decades is someone else’s fault: TV, social media or the economy. “It’ll pick up soon enough”. Believes things have always been done a certain way, so they don’t need to change. Offers to help are seen with contempt.
2. The “young and wise”. A first-time business owner with an answer for everything. Tech-driven, cooler than thou, known to get away with selling avocado toast for $27. Feels unbeatable. Offers to help don’t even merit returning the text message.
3. The “drifter”. Has a business because. Not vested on the specific industry or supply chain. No need to invest in design, marketing or innovation. Sometimes sales are good; sometimes not so much. They live a frugal life. No need, hope or plans for growth. Offers to help are met with apathy and distrust.
4. The “learner”. Creates, studies, learns, develops new ideas, services and products every day at every hour. Vested in the industry, gets to know the people and stories that make up the supply chain and know the origin of what they sell. They are committed to the success of their entire ecosystem and work with a purpose.
Learners are the ones I work best with. They are as committed to the process and their community as I am to guiding them to find beauty in the things they’ve learned and do.
Be a learner. Let’s work together. https://gum.co/happymeal
